Declaration

The Scottish Drugs Forum neither certifies course participants as qualified, accredited nor competent in Motivational Interviewing. As a result of attending the course, participants may not represent themselves as either competent, accredited, qualified, or certified by SDF to provide Motivational Interviewing. Course attendance does signify that participants have undertaken learning and development in the basic concepts and method of Motivational Interviewing and have undertaken some practical experience in trying out this approach.

Please note.

Reflective listening skills are a core component of motivational interviewing practice, so we ask that delegates to this course have received training in, and are practiced in, forming and demonstrating these skills.   As a guide to skill level, the Enhancing Core Communication Skills course that we offer will bring delegates to the right level for this course.  You can book onto the Enhancing Core Communication Skills if you are needing to develop, refresh or update reflective listening skills.

Overview

This course focuses on Motivational Interviewing and its application in supporting behaviour change within a substance use context. It is designed to begin or refresh participant knowledge and skills in Motivational Interviewing practice.

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at practitioners who regularly facilitate conversations about substance use behaviour change with people who present as reluctant or ambivalent about making change.

Aim

To begin learning the application of Motivational Interviewing spirit, skills and strategies to help people who use drugs and/or alcohol find and build their own motivation for change.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the e-learning module and trainer sessions, you will be able to:

  • define the nature of ambivalence about change.
  • discuss how motivational interviewing can influence change by intentionally evoking and strengthening natural language (change talk).
  • practice the spirit of motivational interviewing, integrated with the OARS counselling skills to evoke and strengthen intrinsic motivation for change.
  • consider the application of motivational interviewing practice within own practice setting.
